From Wineglass with Love

Lovely travelling car shot!

I am going to start off by saying how beautiful the town of Corning, NY is.  We are already talking about our return trip next year.

The trip was non-eventful, although it did feel like we were taking a Pennsylvania statewide tour of Sheetz.  What can I say, 2 kids later, I have to pee...

It wasn't until we just about to the PA-NY state line that it started to rain.  Rain, darkness and unfamiliar roads are no fun, but we were glad to arrive at the hotel and get a bite to eat.

Having absolutely no idea where we were I was glad to make it to the 5K on time Saturday morning.  It was pretty chilly, and having left town when it was 20 degrees warmer I wasn't totally prepared for the weather.  I needed gloves and they were 500+ miles away.  The 5K was in it's first year, and was pretty well organized.  I was hoping this a good sign of things to come.

I will finish Saturday off by saying do not. ever. stay at the Ramada Inn in Painted Post.  The bathroom in out room wasn't exactly clean.  Then Saturday evening, after going to bed to be up at the crack of dawn to catch a bus to the start of the half, the smoke alarm went off.  The room smelled like burnt hair.  We called the front desk and they had no idea the alram was going off.  Nothing was on fire, but I wasn't going to be able to sleep now.  They have one room available, I'll take it.  It was about 40 degrees outside so the first thing I did was turn on the heat. Seconds, seconds, later the alarm goes off. WTF?!?  They do discount our room, but that's the only money they will get from us.

I do get to sleep, but it doesn't feel like much.  DH didn't want to get up either, it was cold, since I had to turn the heat off.  He gets me down to the finish line to catch my bus and he decides to get a cup of coffee, his wallet is gone.  Anything else? (We did find the wallet, I think it fell out of his pocket/bag when moving rooms in the middle of the night.)

Travelling by school bus to the high school where the half was starting.  A school bus.  At 6 AM.  To high school, haha.  We are all freezing.  The school was kind enough to open up the school so we could all hang out in the gym until the start of the race, since my bus arrived at 6:40 and the start was at 8:00.

I wasn't really nervous, more anxious.  I wanted to get this show on the road.  Finally a few minutes after 8 we got the word that they started the marathon, so off we went.

13 miles, two cow patches and several road kill later I was turning on to Market St.  Finally I knew where I was.  This road didn't seem so long the night before.  In my mind all I was trying to do was make it to the end before my Garmin switched over to 1:59:00, and I made it! 1:58:13, that's a new personal record, if only by mere tenths of a second.  I made it and my medal was placed around my neck.

I told my mom I was going to tell everyone I came in second!
Will I drink it? Probably not.

On top of the awesome, handmade, glass medals we also received a wine glass and a bottle of champagne!

The timing service used was awesome.  I saw a tweet a few hours after we got home that results were posted.  The same day!  Amazing.  I finished 52 out of 164 in my age group (30-39, I believe).  I am surprised at my final place - 446/1489.  That's way in the top half of runners! I'm very pleased.

A weekend away was fun, but we were both ready to get back home and see the kiddos.

The long road home...

And come Monday morning I must have still been on the 'runner's high' because I signed up for the Pittsburgh FULL marathon.  I'm already nervous.

  1. Congratulations on the half marathon time. I hope to do a half marathon this year to kick off my life plans and accomplish one of my many goals in running. Keep up the running and beautiful photography.
